“Reality doesn't impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. “
~Anais Nin
In finding one’s way to evade the consequences of this black hole we have artificially donned; “life”, we stumble upon various degrees of questionable normality or rather lack thereof. Think of an emotional state picking at your last strength in the real world, something so catastrophic it numbs every humane thought; how would you run away? How would you pretend? How would you make your escape?
In many phases of life we come to experimentation, when substances in the form of drugs and alcohol become something we are eager to prod and poke. These poisons can easily become unbalanced by tumbling from the enjoyment penthouse to the disgustingly excessive basement. Then there are physical outlets that provide violent people with a release of euphoria second to none or one’s own blood that feeds their hunger for pain. Some find tranquilisation within the secret hide outs in their mind. Many rely on loved ones to wipe their tears away and carry their burden thus gifting them a clear conscience. The only escape I find suitable to myself and many others out their (besides writing of course) is gaming.
Gaming on its own is a grand liberation of human minds worldwide. It invites desperately tormented souls to leave their morbid bodies and tend to characters roaming fantasy worlds. Creating a new identity online in order to brutally annihilate beasts that crawl from the vivid imaginations of the game designers is the most placating get away without leaving the security of your own personal space. Take for example, World of Warcraft; it is possibly the most addictive world of surrealism boasting eleven million players and with each account holder given the luxury of a maximum of fifty characters. We can’t deny there is definitely something incredible going on and in terms of Houdini acts from the daily grind; WoW offers a haven where internationally people can socialise in a place that is every player’s alternate universe. Whilst hunched over a computer is probably not very pro-active physically, mentally your mind is constantly in over drive figuring out quests and focussing in raids…as a plus, your nose doesn’t bleed, your veins don’t shred and your brain cells remain very much alive.
Personally I find WoW to be a way I can confidently assert myself. It provides me with the opportunity to be fiercely esteemed and links me to my friends on a plateau that cannot be reached by mere Skype. If given the option to have a night out, yes I would take it. Affordable entertainment that steals reality from your mind, in the comfort of your own home? Any day.
Although alcohol and drugs aren’t bad either :P
